Girls Got Game Draws 700+ to La Verne

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne welcomed over 700 high school female student-athletes at the annual Girls Got Game event in the Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion last Tuesday.

The event, co-hosted by the University of La Verne and the Foothill Citrus Athletic Directors Association (FCADA), welcomed girls from over 30 local high schools to listen to speakers involved in sports at the collegiate and professional levels. The goal of Girls Got Game is to empower girls and help them understand the positive impact athletics can have on their future.

Speakers included La Verne alumnae marketing consultant Dr. Angelina Staumont, ULV assistant volleyball coach and assistant professor Dr. Randi Taylor-Toomay, along with current women's basketball student-athlete Niani Shields. Additionally, certified sports specialist Dr. Emily Ferree, Senior Manager of Community Programs at Angel City FC Sulema Felix, content creator and former professional soccer player Jennifer Muñoz spoke on the panel.

Students in attendance engaged in a Q&A session with the panelists, worked together in breakout sessions, and ended the day with a Zumba session.

"It was great to see The Tents packed with so many eager girls who have a passion for sports. All of our panelists had inspiring stories to share, and I think all the students in attendance benefited from hearing about their journeys, " said University of La Verne Game-Day Operations & Events Manager Ebony Turner, who helped organize the event. "It's an event we've seen grow over the last few years and are excited to welcome it back next year."

Girls Got Game has been held at the University of La Verne for the past three years, and plans are to continue hosting the event annually.
