Leopards Open Season Strong At Coyote Challenge

SAN BERNARDINO, CA – The University of La Verne's men and women's cross country teams opened the season with high marks at the Coyote Challenge on Saturday, including a record-book performance and multiple shattered personal records.

Freshman Avery Bravo led the charge for the women's team in her debut with a top-15 all-time performance in the program. Freshman Angelica Espinoza followed shortly after with a competitive performance, while junior Chloe Chong set her personal bar higher by 48 seconds, a nearly three-minute improvement since her first performance at the CSUSB Cross Country Course. Senior CC Flaherty made an impact in her debut as the fourth scorer for the Leopards, while senior Kaliah Ramirez rounded out the scoring with her fastest performance, a 32-second improvement.

Despite not finishing as a scorer, senior Jessika Paulson had a breakthrough performance with a 44-second personal record. 

The women's cross country team finished 12th in the 14-team field made up of NCAA Division I, II, and III and 3C2A community college programs.

Seniors Joseph Chavarria, Fernando Cortez and Noah Ramos finished in a pack to collect the Leopards' first three scores. Cortez shattered expectations with a 1:25 improvement from his performance last year, while Ramos earned a 21-second PR. Freshman Jamari Eisenberg had an impressive debut, finishing as the fourth scorer for the Leopards.

The men's team finished eighth out of the 13 teams in the 8K race, coming out on top of SCIAC rivals Caltech and Azusa Pacific University.
