Anthony Avila joined the University of La Verne in August 2017.
Avila is charged with disseminating news and statistics for all of La Verne's intercollegiate athletic teams and oversees all aspects of sports information and media relations for the athletics department. He maintains and updates leopardathletics.com with press releases, statistics, rosters, and schedules and manages La Verne athletics' official social media pages. Avila also produces and broadcasts live broadcasts of fall La Verne home games.
He served as the Athletic Communications Director from 2017-2021 and, after a brief hiatus, returned to La Verne in October 2023 and stepped into his current role as Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Sports Information in April 2024.
He is a liaison between La Verne and the SCIAC and NCAA offices. In 2020-21, he oversaw a complete redesign of leopardatheltics.com and created online archives for each team, the La Verne Athletics Hall of Fame, championships, All-Americans, and Scafani Award winners.
During his time away from La Verne, Avila worked with the California Community College Athletics Association (3C2A), served as the sports information director for the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA), and the official scorer and media contact for the 3C2A Softball State Championships. He was the official scorer for the 2022 3C2A Men's and Women's Basketball State Championships and has worked as a statistician for several Southern California community colleges.
Prior to La Verne he accepted a position as the first full-time Assistant Director of Sports Information at Pomona-Pitzer. While with the Sagehens, Avila assisted in all aspects of the sports information department and helped host the opening two rounds of the 2016 NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament held on Pomona College's campus.
Avila was the Assistant Sports Information Director at Occidental College from 2014-2016. In addition to his roles in the sports information office, Avila was also the Intramural Sports Coordinator and Club Sports Supervisor at Oxy. He also served as the Sports Information Student Assistant while pursuing his undergraduate degree.
He was selected to participate in the NCAA Institute for Administrative Advancement in Atlanta during the summer of 2018 and earned a grant to attend the 2019 CoSIDA Convention. In 2021, he served as a judge for the CoSIDA District 3 Stabley Writing Contest.
Outside of collegiate athletics, Avila worked as the Assistant Athletic Director for the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club (LAPRAAC), the athletic arm of the Los Angeles Police Department. He worked for six years as a Youth Development Mentor for the non-profit organization Play Rugby USA.
While attending Occidental College, Avila was part of the football team for one season and the men's rugby team for four seasons. The 2011 rugby squad finished the season ranked as the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) National Runner-Up, and the 2013 team ended the season ranked fifth. He served as team captain and president during his senior season.
A native of Glendora, Azusa resident, and a proud alumnus of Bishop Amat High School, Avila graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and earned a Master of Science degree in leadership and management from La Verne.
