CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne men's soccer team quickly overcame a 1-0 deficit, took a 2-1 first-half lead, and held on for a road win Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer. It was the second time in a week that the squads faced off after tying the previous Saturday.
"Going down 1-0 is never easy and often disappointing, but the team responded quickly, within a few minutes, to tie the game up and a few minutes after tying it up 1-1, took the lead for good. Â Great team effort," said University of La Verne head men's soccer coach
Trevor Persson.
The Leopards found themselves down early after the Sagehens scored 21 minutes into the game. But it didn't take La Verne long to respond. Just over two minutes later,
Owen Osagiede drove into the Sagehens' box and chipped a pass to
Adan Villarreal who headed it in to give the Leopards a much-needed boost.Â
The roles reversed in the 28th minute this time with Villarreal feeding Osagiede who poked through what proved to be the difference maker.
La Verne's goalie,
Logan Reese delivered an outstanding effort, making six critical saves to keep Pomona-Pitzer at bay.Â
"The coaching staff works extremely hard in preparing for each game and we are happy to see our team's preparation and commitment lead to a solid victory. Â Each player, starters or not, worked their tails off and it showed. We made some tactical changes and moved some players around and our staff applauds our players' adaptability and total buy-in. Overall, it was a fun game to be a part of," said Persson.
The Leopards will travel to take on the University of Redlands next on Wednesday, October 18th at 7 P.M.
