Osagiede's Penalty Kick Lifts La Verne Past Cal Lutheran, 3-2

LA VERNE, CA — Owen Osagiede buried a penalty kick to the right side of the net in the 85th minute to give the Leopards a 3-2 lead in what proved to be the difference-maker in La Verne's win over visiting Cal Lutheran.

"Our players were great today and the result is well deserved. We bounced back from a 1-0 deficit and we're able to take a 2-1 lead with 40 minutes or so to play," said University of La Verne men's soccer head coach Trevor Persson.

"Cal Lutheran never stopped pressing us and continued driving at our defenders which caused us some concern. They were able to tie it up 2-2 and it appeared like we were headed to another tie. Owen stepped up and buried our first PK of the season and that was that!"

Osagiede scored his first goal of the night in the 15th minute following a La Verne corner kick to tie the score 1-1. Adan Villarreal got the initial touch that was saved by the keeper, he got off a second shot that was blocked by a defender, then Osagiede booted in the rebound for the equalizer.

Villarreal made good on his attempt early in the second half. Following a Kingsmen goal kick, Alan Jimenez sent a sharp pass toward the Cal Lutheran goal perfectly through a pair of defenders to Villarreal who beat the keeper on the one-on-one opportunity.

Logan Reese did everything he could to give La Verne a chance to win late. He totalled a season-high 12 saves in the game including several diving efforts in the win.

The Kingsmen tied the game with just under 15 minutes remaining setting the stage for the late-game dramatics.

It was Tyler Thomas who helped set up the game-winning penalty kick when he charged into the box chasing after a pass and was fouled hard from behind.

La Verne takes a break from SCIAC play when it hosts UC Santa Cruz on Senior Night, Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
