LOS ANGELES — The Leopards battled on the road and went on a 3-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 13-11 lead over Occidental with under two minutes to play. But The Tigers scored two goals late to force overtime and netted the only points in extra to earn a 14-13 win over the University of La Verne men's water polo team.
Peter Trinh scored five goals in the effort with one steal and one block.
Nicolo Buono and
David Gutierrez each scored three times. Gutierrez added two assists and one steal, and Buono added one assist and one steal.
Eric Bates grabbed 13 saves in the game.
The Leopards got off to a fast start and took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter with goals from Trinh, Buono, and
Jaden Javier and held a 7-5 at halftime advantage.
The Tigers rallied in the third period and tied the game 10-10 heading into the final eight minutes. That's when La Verne went on its late run, sparked by Gutierrez with 4:33 to play. Buono netted back-to-back goals and led by two with 1:29 to go.
But Occidental found a way to tie it late and Tate Miler's overtime goal gave the Tigers the win.
La Verne returns to action when they head to Redlands this Saturday, October 28 at 11 a.m.
