Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Edged by CMS, 1-0

LA VERNE, CA - The University of La Verne women's soccer team battled with the visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in a defensive contest Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium. A lone second-half goal was the difference, giving the Athenas a 1-0 win.

The Athenas broke the stalemate in the 59th minute off a corner kick from Tori Holden, who sent a pass to Kaitlyn Helfrich at the near side of the box. Helfrich touched it in for the 1-0 advantage.

La Verne keeper Abigail Macedo prevented CMS from doubling the score a few minutes later when she stopped a hard shot from close range. Macedo finished with three saves.

The Leopards had most of their chances in the first half when they rattled off six shots and held the Athenas to just one. Early in the first period, Valerie Vera gave the Leopards their best scoring opportunity, but her attempt was saved by CMS keeper Sadie Brown.

Season Impact: Despite the loss, the Leopards are still in the race for a top-four spot in the SCIAC standings. Their record moves to 3-4-4 overall and 1-2-3 in conference play. CMS improved to 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the SCIAC.

Next Game: The Leopards travel to Claremont this Saturday for an 11:30 a.m. showdown with the first-place Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.
