CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne women's volleyball team traveled to Pomona-Pitzer, falling 3-1 in a battle between two top-three teams in the SCIAC.
Ayana Mier led the Leopards with 14 kills and six blocks. Mya Ray led all players with 17 kills and added 15 digs and one ace. Lauren Gott totaled 14 kills and 12 digs.
Malia Capistrano dished a game-high 29 assists and two aces. Madison Smith finished with 20 digs.
After dropping the first two sets the Leopards jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the must-win third. A kill by the Sagehens tied the set 1-1 but La Verne rolled from there, scoring the next seven points capped by a kill from Smith to Ray. The Leopards held on to win the set 25-20, cutting the match deficit to 2-1.
La Verne battled in the third set, going on a 4-0 run late to take a 23-22 lead. But three straight points for the Saghens ended the game.
The loss moves the No. 19 Leopards to 15-2 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-9 and 5-2.
Next Game: The Leopards will travel to Caltech on Tuesday, October 17th, at 7 P.M.
