LAS VEGAS, NV — Naomi Jackson knocked down a three to give the Leopards a 43-41 lead early in the fourth quarter, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team rolled in the final 10 minutes to leave the D3 Hoops Classic with a 57-50 win over Ohio Northern.
La Verne improves to 6-2 overall and drops Ohio Northern to 6-4.
Five Leopards finished in double figures. Jackson and
Chiara Brown each posted 12 points and five rebounds in the win. Brown added two steals, two assists, and two blocks, while Jackson contributed four assists.
Brown was named to the 2023 D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament after totalling 34 points and 11 rebounds over the two games.
Marissa Howell and
Alyssa Smith both drained three three-pointers en route to 11 points apiece. Smith finished with a double-double, securing a game-high and career-best 12 rebounds. Howell dished a game-high six assists.
Brianna Torres also made three shots from beyond the arc to score 11 points with five rebounds and an assist.
The Leopards trailed 41-40 heading into the final period and responded with a 13-2 run to open the frame and take control for good. Smith followed Jackson's three with a long ball of her own on the Leopards' next possession, and Torres made it three three-pointers in a row on La Verne's next trip down the court.
With 4:20 led to play, Smith scored the Leopards' fourth three-pointer of the quarter to put the Leopards up by 10. La Verne outscored the Polar Bears 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Leopards finished the game with 11 three-pointers, tying their season-best as a team.
Layla Dials led Ohio Northern with 12 points.
The La Verne women's basketball squad returns to SCIAC action after the new year when they host Whittier College on January 3 at 7 p.m.
