Big Fourth Quarter Leads to Women's Basketball Win

ORANGE, CA — The University of La Verne women's basketball team outscored Chapman 27-19 in the fourth quarter to turn a two-point deficit into a 69-63 win over the Panthers Saturday night.

Four Leopards finished in double figures in the win, led by Chiara Brown's 16 points. She grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and added three assists and two blocks. She did damage at three free-throw line, hitting 8-10 attempts.

Marissa Howell scored three three-pointers en route to 14 points with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Howell now has 178 made three-pointers in her career, just 15 away from the University La Verne school record. She currently ranks third on the all-time list behind Ashley Paul (195; 2007-2011) and Leslee Rogers (194, 1994-1996).

Alyssa Smith nearly notched a double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. She shot 5-6 from the free-throw line and added two assists with one block.

The Leopards finished 17-22 from the charity stripe, including 7-10 in the final minute to seal the win.

Valentina Limon shot 50 percent from the field, led the Leoprds with four assists, scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, and blocked one shot.

Smith scored a pair of free throws early in the fourth quarter to tie the game 44-44. On Chapman's next possession, Brianna Torres poked the ball away to set up a Howell three-pointer to give the Leopards the lead for good.

The Leopards improve to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC, currently in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Chapman drops to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in SCIAC play.

La Verne returns to action on Monday when they host Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m.
