No. 12 Volleyball Posts 10th Sweep of the Season

LA VERNE, CA — Kaitlyn Bloomer was nearly unstoppable, Zacky Coaston played a fantastic all-around game, and the No. 12 University of La Verne volleyball team got back to its winning ways, sweeping Cal Lutheran Friday night.

It was the Leopards' tenth sweep of the season and sixth in eight games.

Bloomer hit an incredible .700 in the win, finishing with seven kills and a block. It is the best single-game hitting percentage in her career when she's totaled at least 10 attacks. Coaston led the Leopards with four blocks and added seven kills.

Mya Ray finished with a game-high nine kills to go with two aces and 10 digs. Kimi Watanabe-Mayhew and Alison Whiteman both ended with seven kills. Watanabe-Mayhew added two blocks and two digs while Whiteman tallied four digs and an ace.

The Leopards led for the entire first set but the Regals battled to stay close, not allowing La Verne to take a lead of more than four for the first half of the set. But La Verne caught fire and closed on a 13-5 run to take the opening lead. Coaston highlighted the run with back-to-back kills and teamed up with Lauren Gott for a big block.

The second set played out much like the first with both squads staying close for half the set until the Leopards pulled away. Watanabe-Mayhew came alive in the set, posting four kills on seven attacks. Vanessa Marquez connected with Bloomer to put the set away.

La Verne pulled away late in the third with Bloomer fittingly ending the game with an unassisted kill.

Gott ended with five kills, two aces, and 17 digs. Marquez led the Leopards with 18 assists. Malia Capistrano added 17 digs and 15 aces. Madison Smith finished with 10 digs.

The Leopards improved to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the SCIAC. La Verne remains in a tie for second place in the SCIAC with Pomona-Pitzer and trails first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a game. Cal Lutheran dropped to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

The Leopards have the rest of the weekend off and return to action on Tuesday, October 29 when they head to Redlands for a 7 p.m. game against the Bulldogs.
