Cruz's Goal Leads to Tie with Chapman

LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne women's soccer team hosted their
conference foes the Chapman University Panthers in a wild defensive match where neither team could find the back of the net for most of the game.

Natalia Cruz finally broke the stalemate in the 82nd minute and seemed to send the Leopards towards a win. But Chapman's Casey Gilligan scored the equalizer in the final minute to end the game in a 1-1 tie.

The Leopards were coming off a huge 4-0 win to Caltech with a 1-2 record in the SCIAC
coming into the match. The 2-2 Panthers squad was looking to make noise after beating No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer last time out.

It was a defensive showdown for much of the game. Neither could find an attacking rhythm, and the teams combined for just seven first-half shots.

With nine minutes left in the game, Miranda McGarry lined up for a free kick 25 yards out, near the sideline, and sent a pass into the box. Megan Llopis headed the ball to Cruz who headed it off the post and in for the goal.

It looked like Cruz's goal would be the difference maker but with just 57 seconds remaining Chapman scored the equalizer. Jenna Urrabazzo headed a shot to the goal that Abigail Macedo saved but Gilligan put the rebound into the back of the net.

Macedo held her own in one of her best performances, grabbing five saves, four in the second half.

The Leopards moved to 4-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the SCIAC.
