Ray Leads No. 14 Leopards to Sweep at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Mya Ray couldn't be stopped and the No. 14 University of La Verne volleyball team swept Cal Lutheran Friday night.

The Leopards improved to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran fell to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Ray posted 19 kills on .457 hitting in the win. The junior added nine digs and four blocks. Ray leads the SCIAC with 3.84 kills per set and 192 total kills. Vanessa Marquez led La Verne with 25 assists and added three digs.

Zacky Coaston hit .500 in the win with seven kills and three blocks. Coaston's 58 blocks lead the SCIAC. Allison Whiteman tallied eight kills, five digs, and an ace. The Cal State San Bernardino transfer ranks sixth in the SCIAC with 130 kills.

La Verne dominated from start to finish on their trip to Ventura County. Tied 5-5 in the first set the Leopards went on a 12-3 run capped by a block from Kaitlyn Bloomer and Kimi Watanabe-Mayhew to put the set out of reach. Watanabe-Mayhew totaled six kills, three blocks, and six digs. Bloomer added five kills and four blocks, bringing her season total to 46 blocks, placing her fourth in the SCIAC.

The Leopards hit .571 in the second for another commanding win. La Verne scored the first seven points in the set off three kills from Ray before the Regals could get on the board. La Verne finished on a 5-0 run to claim the set.

Cal Lutheran fought in the final set, cutting La Verne's lead to 20-19. But the Leopards scored five of the final six points to complete the sweep.

Malia Capistrano ended with 18 assists, two aces, and three digs. Madison Smith led La Verne with 15 digs. 

Sophomore Lauren Gott finished with six kills, nine digs, and an ace. 

La Verne returns to action on Tuesday, October 8 for a 7 p.m. home game against Redlands.
