Moore, Rumsey Post Big Game Against Redlands

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team couldn't overcome costly turnovers and a big first quarter by the University of Redlands and fell 31-21 to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.

Jimmy Rumsey matched his career-high with 150 receiving yards. He added a highlight reel catch in the third quarter when he leaped and snatched the ball with one hand. The 31-yard reception led to a six-yard touchdown rush by quarterback Brian Rudden on the next play to cut Redlands' lead to 17-14 and cap a nine-play, 83-yard drive.

Rumsey added a touchdown on the Leopards' longest play of the day. Early in the fourth, he caught one of his eight passes at the seven yard-line, made a trio of defenders miss, and dove into the end zone. The score followed by Jason Lopez's PAT put the score at 31-21 with 9:51 to play.

Rudden finished the game with 275 yards passing, two touchdowns, and 21 completions. Jayson Lopez made all three of his PATs.

Running back Malcolm Perry got the Leopards on the board in the second quarter when he got a pass in the flat and ran in for a three-yard score. Makena Ramos-Kamaka hauled in seven catches for 86 yards.

De Lante' Moore forced a fumble to set up the Leopards' first score. Moore came around the edge and stripped quarterback Jayden Mckey. Defensive tackle David Sisneros pounced on the ball, giving the Leopards momentum. Moore created havoc for the Bulldogs all game. He finished with 10 total tackles, seven solo tackles, four tackles for losses, and two sacks.

The SCIAC leader in tackles, Vicente Zepeda added to his conference-leading total. The strong safety paced La Verne with 14 tackles, including six solo efforts, to bring his season total to 76.

The La Verne linebacking crew had a solid game. Devin Martin added double-digit takedowns, tallying 10 tackles in the game, and Nathan Tagaloa finished with six. Justin MacArthur added three tackles and one for a loss.

Early turnovers proved to be the difference maker. Two first-quarter interceptions led to Bulldog touchdowns.

La Verne moves to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in the SCIAC.

The Leopards will play their final home game of the season next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Chapman University. The Leopards will honor their seniors in a brief pregame ceremony.
