Howell Sets Three-Pointer Record

LA VERNE CA — Junior three-point specialist Marissa Howell broke the all-time three-pointers made record as the University of La Verne women's basketball team hosted UC Santa Cruz in nonconference action Saturday night.

Howell entered the game with 190 three-pointers made in her career and needed just four to break the record previously held by Ashley Paul since 2011.

Howell tied the record with just over a minute left in the first half, setting the stage for a record-breaking third quarter. Just under a minute and a half left in the period, forward Chiara Brown set a screen to open up the three-point line for Howell. Santa Cruz defended the roll, creating space for Howell to sink her fourth three of the game to break the school record.

It took Paul 105 career games to set the previous record. Howell set the new mark in 72. Only a junior, Howell has plenty of chances to extend her record.

Howell finished with five made threes and led the Leopards offensively with 20 points.

Chiara Brown recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 assist. Brianna Torres grabbed a season-high six rebounds and contributed 12 points to the Leopards offense.

Naomi Jackson added 11 points.

The Banana Slugs came away with a 70-65 win.

The Leopards return to SCIAC action travel to Whittier College on Wednesday, September 7th at 7 p.m.

La Verne is currently in a tie for second place in the SCIAC with Cal Lutheran.
