LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team faced off against Baldwin Wallace University and Chapman University in a pair of nonconference games Saturday.
Game One: La Verne 6, Baldwin Wallace 1
Pitcher Kristin Sanchez improved to 3-1 and struck out three with just one walk.
West Covina native Ashley Rodriguez finished 2-4. She highlighted the game with a triple in the sixth that scored Angelina Alderete and Erika Garcia and put the Leopards up 6-0. Rodriguez also added a double and stole home in the third on a double steal attempt by the Leopards.
Garcia led the Leopards at the plate, going 3-4. She gave La Verne the opening 1-0 run when she singled in Alderete in the first inning and drove in Sydney Diaz in the fourth.
Alderete and Garcia have gotten off to a hot start and lead the Leopards with a .457 and .366 respective batting averages.
Taylor Gary took advantage of a Baldwin Wallace miscue and scored on a wild pitch in the second.
Game Two: Chapman 5, La Verne 1
The Leopards fell into a 4-0 hole in the top of the first and couldn't recover in a nonconference matchup against the Panthers. La Verne allowed only one more run in the third inning but struggled to get going offensively.
Garcia singled to center field to plate in the Alderete for La Verne's only score of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Season Impact
The Leopards move to 4-8 on the season.
