Game Recap: Women's Water Polo | | Anthony Avila

Leopards Start SCIAC 3-0 with Win Over Redlands

CLAREMONT, CA — Reiley Burton and Olivia Taylor each scored four times, and the University of La Verne women's water polo team posted an impressive 10-6 win over Redlands Wednesday afternoon.

The Leopards improve to 3-0 in the SCIAC and move to 4-7 overall. La Verne is currently ranked No. 3 in Division III.

La Verne took advantage of a pair of power plays to jump out to a 2-0 lead from goals by Burton and Taylor. After Redlands got on the board, Burton and Taylor each found the back of the net again to give the Leopards a 4-1 lead at the end of the first.

The Leopards made the most of their power play opportunities, scoring four times when up a player.

Reigning SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week Kelly Jackson frustrated the Bulldogs' defense, turning away nine shots in the win.

Sumi Rudisky and Brooklyn Young both finished with one goal and one assist.

The Bulldogs tried to make things interesting late, scoring with 2:40 left to play to cut La Verne's lead to 8-5. But Burton responded just seconds later to give La Verne a four-point cushion.

The Leopards put the stamp on the game on a give-and-go connection from Maya Garcia-Hale to Taylor with a minute and a half left to play.
