LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team hosted Williams College for a double-header, splitting with the Ephs Wednesday.
Game One: La Verne 6, Williams 3
La Verne started strong, taking a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Ephs couldn't gain any momentum after strong pitching and defensive play from the Leopards.
Kirstin Sanchez added a win (5-3), only allowing three runs in seven innings. Angelina Alderete led with three stolen bases, a season-high for the transfer. Alderete went 2-3 with two singles, two runs, and a walk. Ashley Rodriguez went 2-3 with a run and added a stolen base.
Freshman Julia Miramontes and graduate student Taylor Gray led the way with two RBIs each. Erika Garcia and Marissa Acosta each added one RBI.
Williams cut La Verne's lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. But the threat was short-lived after a sacrifice fly from Acosta, and a two-run single from Miramonte put the Leopards back up by four.
Game Two: Williams 6, La Verne 5
La Verne started their first at-bat in a 3-0 deficit after a three-run home run by the Ephs. The Leopards got the game to within one run in the second and again in the sixth inning but couldn't complete a comeback.
The Ephs jumped on the Leopards early, scoring in each of the first four innings.
In the second, Gray singled to right field and drove in Alderete and Sydney Diaz to make the score 4-3.
Diaz went 2-2 in her at-bats and added a stolen base.
