Women's Water Polo Holds Off Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, CA — The University of La Verne women's water polo team jumped out to an 11-5 lead at the end of the third quarter, held off a late comeback attempt by the Regals, and left Cal Lutheran with a 13-12 win.

Season Impact

The Leopards start SCIAC play 2-0 and improve to 3-7 overall. La Verne is undefeated against NCAA Division III opponents.

How It Happened

Sumi Rudisky and Reiley Burton each scored four times. Maddie Grove scored twice and added two assists. Brooklyn Young scored twice.

After Rudisky scored with 47 seconds left in the third quarter to give La Verne a six-goal lead, it seemed the Leopards would cruise to an easy road win, but the Reglas had other plans.

Cal Lutheran went on a 6-1 run to start the fourth quarter, cutting La Verne's lead to 12-11. Burton came through clutch with under a minute to play to give La Verne a two-goal cushion.

The Regals got back to within one with 31 seconds left to play but couldn't even score.

Kelly Jackson picked up the win in the change, grabbing eight saves and a steal.

Next Game

The Leopards will look for their third straight win against SCIAC opponents when they face Redlands on Wednesday, March 13 at 4 p.m. The game will be hosted at Claremont McKenna College's Axelrood Aquatics Center.
