Softball Opens Doubleheader with Win Over Sagehens

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team took on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a rescheduled doubleheader due to last week's rain. The Leopards opened the doubleheader with a win and were edged out by a run in game two.

Game One: La Verne 4, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Sagehens struck first in the opening inning, bringing in two runs for an early lead. 

Ashley Rodriguez quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the inning when she hit a double to center field to bring in Cassandra Zapata and Taylor Gray to tie.

Alyssa Campbell singled to left field to plate Zapata to give La Verne the 3-2 lead in the third inning.

First baseman, Marissa Acosta extended the lead in the fourth when hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Erika Garcia.

Left fielder Julia Miramontes and Zapata each went 2-3 in their at-bats.

Kirstin Sanchez picked up the complete game win to improve to 7-6.

Game Two: Pomona-Pitzer 2, La Verne 1

The Leopards struggled to get their offense going in game two. Down 2-0 in the fifth, La Verne was down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Angelina Alderete singled to centerfield, bringing in Sydney Diaz for the Leopards' only score.

Kirstin Sanchez and Jada Coria split time in the circle

The Leopards had their best chance to take the lead with bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but the Sagehens forced a ground out to end the threat.

Next Game

The Leopards will host Chapman University on Friday, April 19 at 3 PM
