SAN ANTONIO, TX — The University of La Verne baseball team fell 18-9 to Trinity University in game one of the best-of-five series.
Trinity starter Jackson Teer struck out the side to open the game. The Tigers' offense then put up nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and didn't look back.
The Leopards entered the top of the fifth inning down 16-0 until Ryan Vosika and Anthony Salcedo hit back-to-back run-scoring singles, making it 16-2.
Noah Garcia hit a two-run home run to the opposite field in the top of the sixth inning to make it 16-4. Garcia finished the day 4-5 at the plate and was one triple shy of the cycle.
Relief pitcher Garret Halbeisen provided some durability out of the pen, going 3.2, striking out three, and giving up one run. The Tigers were 2-13 (.153) against Halbeisen.
In the top of the eighth inning, Jason Givens came off the bench with an RBI single. Matthew Diaz added a 2-run double to make it 17-7.
The Leopards added some runs in the ninth. Logan Corthell had an RBI single, and Vosika drove in his second run of the game to make it 18-9.
The Leopards are back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 9 a.m. (PT), with game two beginning at 12:30 p.m. (PT)
