La Verne Sweeps Doubleheader to Go Up 2-1 in NCAA Regional

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The University of La Verne baseball team defeated the Trinity Tigers 12-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series in the NCAA Regional.

Logan Reese headlined the La Verne offense with three RBIs and a solo home run. The pitching was extraordinary. Matthew DesMarets got the start and went four and a third, striking out a season-high eight batters and walking two. Ethan Galindo relieved DesMarets and went four and two-thirds, striking out four and allowing two runs. DesMarets and Galindo took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

Benny Vogel led off the game with a solo home run to right field, with Noah Garcia driving in two to make it 3-0. Garcia has nine RBI in the first three games of the regional.

In the top of the third inning, Reese hit a solo home run to extend the Leopards lead 4-0. Reese has now homered in back-to-back games.

Ryan Vosika had an RBI single at the top of the fourth inning, followed by an RBI groundout off Anthony Salcedo's bat, making it 6-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, a pair of RBI groundouts from Aiden Salcedo and Anthony Salcedo made it 8-0.

Reese got another RBI in the top of the sixth inning to make it 9-0 Leopards.

Matthew Diaz had an RBI in the top of the seventh inning, followed by Reese's third RBI of the day in a run-scoring single to make it 11-0.

Malachi Francois came across on a fielding error in the top of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 12-0.

Trinity got their first runs of the game in the eighth inning with a Colt Harris 2-run home run, making it 12-2. The Tigers got another run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

La Verne out hit Trinity 19-2.

Game 4 is set for 9 a.m. (PT), with game 5 (if necessary) beginning at 12:30 p.m. (PT). With a win tomorrow, La Verne can clinch a spot in the NCAA Super Regional for the second consecutive year.
