La Verne Season Ends in Super Regional with 6-4 loss to Lynchburg

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team was defeated by the University of Lynchburg 6-4 in game two of the best-of-three series, ending their season.

The Leopards finish their season 30-16-1, claiming their second consecutive NCAA Regional Championship and second consecutive SCIAC regular season title. La Verne has won 30 or more games in the last four full seasons played.

Logan Reese provided the biggest highlight of the game for La Verne. Scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, he cranked a two-run home run to left field to give the Leopards an early 2-0 lead.

La Verne scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make things interesting. Trailing 6-2 with bases loaded and one out, Ryan Vosika dropped a perfect bunt single to third to bring Anthony Salcedo home. Reese drew a walk to plate Malachi Francois to get the Leopards within two. But the Hornets got the final two outs to win the series.

Gerald Terry went seven innings for the Leopards, striking out four, walking one, and giving up four runs. Matthew DesMarets struck out two and Austin Klopfenstein struck out three.

The Hornets scored six runs to secure the victory after falling behind 0-2 early. Lynchburg quickly tied the game on back-to-back RBIs in the top of the second inning.

Tied at two, the Hornets got their first lead of the game in the fifth, thanks to Quinn Madden's RBI single. The Hornets extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single and got two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to go up 6-2.

Vosika and Jared Benach each finished with two hits.
