Homers Hurt Leopards at CMS

CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 11 University of La Verne baseball team had a chance to clinch sole possession of the SCIAC regular season title on Friday. But a walk-off single by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps spoiled the Leopards' hopes for at least a day.

The Leopards move to 15-10-1 overall and 17-5 and five in the SCIAC. The Leopards need just one win in Saturday's doubleheader to clinch the regular season title. The Stags at 27-10 overall and 15-7 in the SCIAC remain tied for second in the conference with Pomona-Pitzer.

Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners on second and third, Adam Dapkewicz singled to left to bring in the winning run for the Stags.

The Leopards opened up a 4-0 after the first three innings, starting with a bases-loaded walk in the first by Nathan Perry. Logan Corthell and Logan Reese followed with RBI singles and Aiden Salcedo capped the early run with a groundout RBI.

Despite the La Verne pitching staff striking out 11 batters, CMS connected on the long ball, hitting four home runs in the game, accounting for five Stags' runs.

Perry finished with two RBIs and Ryan Vosika went 3-4 with two runs.

Niko Urquidi struck out nine batters in his start.
