Strong Overtime Play Lifts Leopards to Conference Win Over Caltech

PASADENA, CA — The University of La Verne Men's Basketball team secured a thrilling 80-76 overtime victory against Caltech in a SCIAC conference match-up at Braun Gymnasium.

The Leopards' senior leadership was on full display, with standout performances leading the charge. Senior guard Dahmaj Warren and senior forward Logen Howard both delivered impressive scoring performances, each tallying 22 points. Warren dominated the boards with 12 rebounds, recording a double-double, while Howard connected on four three-pointers. Ryan Lin made a significant impact, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Sharodd Lewis delivered a well-rounded performance, scoring 10 points and showcasing his defensive prowess with nine rebounds and three steals.

La Verne built an early lead, heading into halftime with a 35-28 advantage. However, Caltech battled back in the second half, outscoring the Leopards 41-34 to force overtime.

In overtime, the Leopards displayed resilience and strategic execution to secure the win. With the score tied at 69-69, Cody Aquino made a clutch jumper to give La Verne a 71-69 lead. Shortly after, Lin extended the lead with a layup off an offensive rebound, putting the Leopards ahead 73-69. Defensive efforts were key, with Lewis making a crucial steal that prevented Caltech from closing the gap. La Verne then capitalized on their momentum, as Howard sank a pivotal three-pointer to stretch the lead to five. In the final moments, Lewis capitalized on free-throw opportunities, further cushioning the lead. Despite a late three-pointer from Caltech, Lin iced the game with two more free throws, securing the 80-76 victory.

Chase Williamson led the Beavers with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Josh Balami added 18 points. Despite Caltech's strong second-half effort, La Verne's ability to capitalize on second-chance opportunities and control the boards proved to be the difference.

With this win, La Verne improves to 6-10 overall and 1-6 in SCIAC play. The Leopards will look to carry their momentum forward as they prepare to face Chapman University on Wednesday, January 29th, at 7 PM in Orange, Ca.
