No. 1 Leopards Sweep Poets

LA VERNE, CA — The streak continues. The No. 1 University of La Verne's Volleyball team remained undefeated through 18 matches after sweeping the Whittier College Poets in three sets on Tuesday night.

Outside hitter Mya Ray led the pack, tallying up 18 kills and 12 digs while outside hitter Lauren Gott and Mariah Ray both notched nine kills each. Setters Vanessa Marquez and Malia Capistrano orchestrated the Leopards' offense, finishing with 23 and 17 assists, respectively.

La Verne tallied 12 blocks in the game, led by four from Valerie Gallegos and three from Zacky Coaston.

The Leopards dominated the opening set, racking up 18 kills and an impressive .643 hitting percentage, while Whittier struggled to find rhythm, hitting just .100 with five errors. La Verne cruised to a 25-10 win to open the match.

In the second set, the Poets came out confidently, hoping to disrupt the Leopards' momentum — but La Verne stayed composed. A highlight came from libero Keilani Mumolo who made an incredible kick save during a long rally that fired up the team. The Leopards carried that energy through the rest of the set, closing it out 25-16.

Set three started with La Verne on fire, taking the first eight points before Whittier battled back, eventually tying the score and taking a late 23-22 lead. After a timeout from head coach Jeff Hendershot, the Leopards regrouped and tied it 24-all. With the Leopards up 27-26, Gott sealed the win for La Verne after another long rally, clinching the sweep over Whittier.

With the win, the Leopards improved to 18-0 and remain one of two undefeated teams in the country, along with No. 2 East Texas Baptist (22-0). They will continue SCIAC play this Friday against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in Claremont at 7 p.m.
