Battle Tested: Leopards Refocus After Five-Set Heartbreaker

REDLANDS, CA - After more than two months of flawless play, the University of La Verne women's volleyball team saw its undefeated run come to an end Tuesday night, falling to Redlands in a five-set thriller inside Currier Gym. The Leopards, who entered the match as one of just two unbeaten teams in Division III, were edged 3-2 by the Bulldogs, with set scores of 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, and 11-15.

La Verne opened the match strong, taking the first two sets behind composed offensive execution and steady defensive coverage. But as the night wore on, Redlands found rhythm, extended rallies, and made key plays down the stretch to force a decisive fifth frame. The Bulldogs seized early momentum in the final set and held off the Leopards' push to close out the upset.

Junior outside hitter Mya Ray led all players with 30 kills, adding 18 digs and two aces in a standout performance at the net and on serve receive. Her swing accuracy and late-set composure helped keep La Verne in striking distance throughout the match.

The Leopards also benefited from strong contributions across the lineup. Mariah Ray added 9 kills and 4 blocks, while Zacky Coaston posted 7 kills and 5 total blocks to anchor the front line. Malia Capistrano distributed 25 assists with 13 digs, and libero Keilani Mumolo paced the back row with 14 digs and two aces.

Despite the loss, the Leopards showed resilience throughout, coming within two points of taking both the third and fourth sets. The match marked only the second time this season La Verne has gone to five sets, further emphasizing the competitive pressure of November conference play.

La Verne now stands at 22-1 overall and 13-1 in SCIAC, with two matches remaining in the regular season.
