LA VERNE, CA — After rain cancelled its game on Thursday, the No. 18 University of La Verne's baseball team continued their series against the No. 10 East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Friday afternoon, winning 13-6 and sweeping the two-game series.
Senior third baseman
Logan Corthell led the Leopards, going 4-4, with four runs scored, three RBIs, and one walk. Senior first baseman
Noah Garcia recorded three hits, drove in two runs, and scored two runs himself. Junior catcher
Nathan Perry logged two hits while senior right fielder
Logan Reese brought in two runs.
La Verne led by one run, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth inning until the Leopards broke the score open and connected for six runs on two hits. Texas pitching gifted La Verne free bases, hitting four batters and walking one in the inning.
The bottom of the fifth began with back-to-back singles from Perry and junior second baseman
Aiden Salcedo off ETBU junior pitcher Hayden Robichaux. Perry came around to score and Salcedo advanced to second on a fielding error by Tigers junior left fielder Carson Livesay. Senior outfielder
Matthew Diaz brought Salcedo home when he singled to left field. With two outs in the inning, Corthell doubled down the right field line and Garcia delivered, hitting a single to right field, letting Corthell trot home and cushioning the Leopards lead by three more runs, 13-3.
The Tigers sparked a two-out rally in the top of the eighth inning, earning three runs back off two hits and a walk to make the score 13-6 going into the final inning.
Freshman pitcher
Corbin Duffield secured the 13-6 victory for the Leopards after junior pitcher
Cole Monsen got the first two outs of the ninth inning. Senior pitcher Matthew Desmarets started the game for La Verne, going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out eight, and getting his first win of the season. Sophomore pitcher
Justin Ries also struck out four batters in his 1.2 innings of relief.
Junior pitcher Tyler Bogusz started for the Tigers, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Senior pitcher Jackson Jones took the loss, giving up six runs on five hits. At the plate, Texas was led by senior shortstop Dylan Burnaman, who went 2-4 at the plate and drove home three runs.
The Leopards will look to continue their winning ways when they host the University of Chicago this Sunday at 11 a.m. at Ben Hines Field.
