Leopards Complete Three-Game Sweep of Boxers

FOREST GROVE, OR The University of La Verne's baseball team completed a commanding three-game series sweep of the Pacific University Boxers, taking Sunday's game 11-3.

The Leopards' offense totaled 16 hits. Junior shortstop Ryan Vosika and senior outfielder Jason Givens connected for three hits and two runs apiece. Senior outfielders Logan Reese and Benny Vogel both recorded two hits while junior catcher Nathan Perry collected two RBIs.

Garret Halbeisen picked up the win, pitching five innings of relief, striking out six, while giving up just one earned run.

Pacific took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs off four hits. But their lead didn't last long as the Leopards surged back in the third, plating four runs on six hits and taking the lead 5-2.

Like the first two games of the series, La Verne struck early on when senior third baseman and reigning Leopard of the Week Logan Corthell hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in junior infielder Aaron Whobrey, taking the early lead in the top of the first inning.

Sophomore Mikey Rogozik started on the bump for the Leopards with one strikeout. Senior Kyle Noell and junior Gabriel Lucero both pitched scoreless innings in relief for the Leopards. Halbeisen picked up his second win of the year while Boxers' pitcher Vincent Lagatta took the loss for Pacific.

The Leopards' final game of their road trip at Lewis & Clark College was rained out. La Verne returns home this Friday and opens up SCIAC play against the Whittier College Poets at 2 p.m.
