La Verne’s Seniors Leave Their Mark as Season Comes to a Close

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne Men's Basketball team battled down to the wire in a thrilling Senior Day matchup against Pomona-Pitzer but fell just short, 78-77, in their season finale in the Tents.

The Leopards took the court to honor their seniors—Dahmaj Warren, Ryan Lin, Logen Howard, and Joshua Rook—along with graduate student Paul Antonis. Though unable to play due to injury, Warren, who ranked among the top scorers in all of Division III before his season was cut short, was recognized for his exceptional leadership and lasting impact on the program.

The senior-led Leopards delivered an inspired performance, maintaining control for most of the game. Antonis, playing in his final game after five seasons with La Verne, delivered a spectacular 31-point effort, further solidifying his place in program history with 1,080 career points. Howard also stepped up with 14 points, while Cody Aquino added 12 points and four rebounds.

La Verne came out strong, taking a 46-39 lead into halftime behind sharp shooting and a tenacious defensive effort. However, Pomona-Pitzer fought back in the second half, tying the game multiple times before eventually taking the lead in the final minute.

With just nine seconds remaining, Logen Howard knocked down two crucial free throws to bring the Leopards within one. After a defensive stand, La Verne had one final chance, but a last-second three-point attempt fell just short as time expired.

With the game remaining tightly contested until the final buzzer, there were few clear deciding factors in determining the winner. However, Pomona-Pitzer's slight edge on the boards proved crucial, as they outrebounded La Verne 35-31, leading to key second-chance opportunities down the stretch. Joe Cookson led the Sagehens with 27 points, while Ty Bergman recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Leopards displayed remarkable resilience and determination in their final game of the season.

La Verne closes the season at 7-17 overall and 2-13 in SCIAC play, with a senior class that has left an undeniable mark on the program.
