Leopards Celebrate Senior Day, Howell Closes Career as One of La Verne’s Best

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne Women's Basketball team wrapped up its season with a heartfelt Senior Day celebration, but fell short against Pomona-Pitzer, 78-65, at the Tents.

The Leopards started strong, leading 39-38 at halftime behind an impressive offensive effort. Senior Marissa Howell, one of the most decorated players in program history, joined fellow seniors Madison Salisbury, Annie Trinh, and team manager Kim Leon in their final game with the program. Howell contributed five points and five rebounds, Trinh recorded 12 points and three rebounds, while Salisbury added four points and four boards.

La Verne's offense was powered by junior Alyssa Smith, who delivered a stellar 26-point performance along with eight rebounds. Niani Shields also made an impact as she provided a key spark off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer took control in the second half, outscoring La Verne 27-13 in the third quarter to swing the momentum in their favor. Emily Lee led the Sagehens with 22 points, connecting on six three-pointers, while Jadyn Lee recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Leopards battled throughout the fourth quarter but struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 18.2% from three-point range. Despite their efforts, they were unable to reclaim the lead, concluding the 2024-25 season with a 7-17 overall record and a 4-12 mark in SCIAC play.

The game marked the end of an era for La Verne's senior class, who leave behind a legacy of leadership and resilience. The Leopards will now look ahead to the future, building on the foundation set by this dedicated group of student-athletes.
