Alvarez Throws Scoreless Five Innings in Doubleheader Split

LA VERNE, CA — Junior Jaidynn Alvarez tossed a scoreless five innings and freshman catcher Natalie Serrano connected for her first two collegiate hits as the University of La Verne softball team split their Monday doubleheader with the Williams College Ephs, dropping game one 2-1, but coming back and taking game two 3-1.

Game Two: La Verne 3, Williams 1

Alvarez pitched a scoreless five innings, only giving up four hits, while senior Kirsten Sanchez closed out the game and secured the win for La Verne, throwing two innings and allowing one run on four hits. William's starter Katie Blanch took the loss, going 5.2 innings, and surrendering three runs on six hits.

Key Moment

With the game tied up 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Serrano and senior center fielder Ashley Rodriguez led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Returning from injury, freshman shortstop Mackenzie Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring the go-ahead run that Serrano represented from third base. The Leopards extended their lead to 3-1 when Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch from Blanch.

Game One: Williams 2, La Verne 1

Freshman Briana Vasquez tossed a complete game, only allowing two runs on seven hits, but the Leopards' offense struggled against Ephs starter Sadie Leonard.

La Verne's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior right fielder Angelina Alderete dropped down a bunt single and found her way home when senior left fielder Sydney Diaz doubled down the left field line.
