Leopards Split Doubleheader with Sagehens

CLAREMONT, CA- Senior Designated Player Cassandra Gilbert racked up four RBIs as the University of La Verne softball team split their Saturday doubleheader against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, winning game one 9-5, but dropping game two, 3-0.
 
Game one: La Verne 9, Pomona-Pitzer 5
 
Freshman Briana Vasquez started the game, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits before junior Jaidynn Alvarez relieved her and threw 2.2 solid innings, allowing just one run on three hits, picking up her second win of the season. Senior Kirstin Sanchez closed out the game for the Leopards with a fly out and earned her second save of the season.
 
Key Moments
With the game all tied up 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning, senior catcher Alyssa Campbell hit a clutch, go-ahead single to center field, scoring sophomore second baseman Julia Miramontes and giving the Leopards their lead back, 5-4.
 
Gilbert cushioned La Verne's lead when she ripped her bases-clearing double to right-center, putting her team up 8-4.
 
Freshman third baseman Janelle Vega extended ULV's lead again when she singled up the middle, scoring freshman first baseman Reagan Hallet and collecting her third RBI of the season.
 
Game Two: Pomona-Pitzer 3, La Verne 0
 
La Verne couldn't keep their momentum going heading into game three of the series. Sophomore Jada Coria took a tough loss, pitching a complete game and only giving up three runs on five hits.
 
Top Performer
Senior center fielder Ashley Rodriguez recorded two hits. Her 35 total hits on the season are team leading, and her .415 AVG is ninth in the SCIAC.
 
Up Next
The Leopards will look to bounce back this Tuesday at home at 3 P.M. against the Cal Lutheran Regals. This game was halted on March 17th due to rain and will pick back up in the bottom of the first inning.
