Corthell Launches Fourth Homerun as Leopards Dominate Sagehens

LA VERNE, CA- Senior third baseman Logan Corthell launched his fourth home run of the season as the No. 7 University of La Verne Leopards continued their seven-game win streak against the No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, securing a dominant 11-4 win on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup.
 
Game Summary
Freshman Lucas Quintana opened the bullpen game for the Leopards, who relied on the combined efforts of five pitchers to hold the powerful Sagehens to four runs. Freshman Andrew Wente picked up his first win of the season and his collegiate career, tossing two scoreless innings. Pomona-Pitzer sophomore starter William Wallace took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) off five hits and four walks in four innings thrown.
 
With the score tied up 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning, senior catcher and reigning Leopard of the Week Matt Rice continued his hot streak, hitting a bases-clearing, go-ahead double to center field and giving his team a 4-2 lead. Corthell followed with his two-run home run over the left field fence, extending the Leopards' lead by four.
 
The Leopards' bats stayed hot throughout the rest of the game. Corthell finished with two hits and three RBI's while senior outfielder Jason Givens and senior designated hitter Matthew Diaz each collected two hits. Junior shortstop Ryan Vosika led with his speed on the bases, crossing the plate three times. As a team, the Leopards combined for eleven hits and seven walks off the Sagehens' staff.
 
Season Impact
With the win, La Verne improves their overall record to 30-6 and 17-4 in conference play. They remain in sole possession of first place in the SCIAC.
 
Next Up
The Leopards will wrap up regular season play with a three-game set against the University of Redlands Bulldogs beginning this Friday at 3 p.m. at Ben Hines Field.
