Women's Water Polo Wipes Out Whittier

LA VERNE, CA — Reiley Burton and Olivia Taylor combine for seven goals as the Leopards win their second straight game, 13-10 at Whittier College Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact

This win for the Leopards improves their record to 6-14 overall and 5-4 in conference. They control their postseason chances and continue to pursue a conference tournament appearance in Interim Head Coach Robert Echeverria's first season at the helm.

Key Players

Burton and Taylor both came up big in the victory. Burton led the team in scoring with four goals on just six shots. Taylor found the back of the net three times to help seal the victory. The pair dished out two assists apiece. Additionally, Gigi Gomez and Brooklyn Young also had stellar performances, each scoring twice. Young led La Verne with three assists. 

Miranda Graham had a strong game in the net. She recorded a season high 15 saves over thirty-two minutes of action. 

Dottie Barrera drew four exclusions to help six-on-five opportunities for La Verne. The Leopards converted on 50% of their power plays. 

How It Happened

The game started competitively as both the Leopards and the Poets netted four goals each in the first quarter. However, La Verne outscored Whittier 3-1 in both the second and third quarters to take a 10-6 lead into the fourth. Despite being outscored in the last quarter, the Leos hung on to win it by a final of 13-10. 

Next Game

The Leos will be back in the pool at Las Flores Park on Wednesday as they celebrate the impactful members of their team on senior day. The game has been moved to the evening and will start at 7 p.m. against the University of Redlands Bulldogs.
