La Verne’s Season Ends in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker Against Pomona-Pitzer in NCAA Regional

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team saw its season come to a close Saturday night in a dramatic 10-inning battle, falling 2-1 to Pomona-Pitzer in an NCAA Division III Regional Tournament elimination game at Ben Hines Field. The defeat ends the Leopards' 2025 campaign with a 35-11 overall record after an unforgettable season marked by historic milestones and championship success.

La Verne trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth but refused to go down quietly. With two outs and a runner on, senior Matthew Rice stepped up and delivered a clutch RBI double to right center to score Malachi Francois and send the game to extra innings. However, the Sagehens responded in the top of the 10th with an RBI single up the middle by Cooper Berry, bringing home JC Ng for what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Leopards had opportunities throughout the night but struggled to capitalize, tallying just three hits and leaving 10 runners on base. Jason Givens, Rice, and Nate Perry recorded the team's only hits. Francois reached base three times and scored La Verne's lone run.

La Verne's pitching staff turned in a gritty group performance, using five different arms to navigate 10 innings. Starter Caughlin Shults threw three no-hit innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen. Ultimately, Justin Ries took the loss in relief after surrendering the go-ahead run in the 10th.

Despite the tough ending, the Leopards conclude 2025 with plenty to celebrate. The season included their first SCIAC Tournament title since 2015 and a 600th career win milestone for longtime Head Coach Scott Winterburn, who completed his 25th season at the helm. La Verne consistently proved itself as one of the region's top programs, combining elite talent, resilience, and leadership throughout the year.

While the tournament exit stings, the Leopards walk away proud of a campaign that re established their place among Division III's best and added new chapters to the program's storied legacy.
