Gilbert Smacks First Career Homerun as Leopards Close Out Season

LA VERNE, CA -  Senior designated player Cassandra Gilbert launched her first career home run in her final at bat of her collegiate career as the University of La Verne softball team closed out their 2025 season with a doubleheader against the Whittier College Poets, dropping game one 8-0, and game two 7-6.

The Leopards nearly completed a comeback in game two. Trailing by three heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman first baseman Reagan Hallet hit a leadoff double for her third hit of the day, putting herself on base for Gilbert, who smacked her two-run home run over the left field fence. While the Leopards fell short, seven seniors were celebrated post-game for their accomplishments on and off the field.

Senior outfielders Ashley Rodriguez, Sydney Diaz and Angelina Alderete combined for five hits in game two, ending their careers on high notes.

Rodriguez led the 2025 Leopards with 47 hits and 38 RBI's. Her .418 batting average takes sixth place in the SCIAC while Alderete finished out her career with 43 hits and 23 stolen bases, third in the conference.

Freshman infielders Mackenzie Johnson and Hallet had stellar rookie seasons. Johnson finished the year with 28 hits and an outstanding fielding percentage of .972. The shortstop turned 10 double plays on the season and had 83 assists, tied for sixth in the SCIAC while Hallet recorded 42 hits, giving her a .393 batting average, tenth in the conference.

The Leopards will look towards the 2026 season.
