LA VERNE, CA — Former University of La Verne pitcher
Matthew DesMarets has signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Twins, taking a major step in his baseball career and becoming the latest Leopard to reach the professional level.
DesMarets wrapped up a stellar four-year career with the Leopards, serving as one of the most consistent and reliable arms in the SCIAC. Across his time at La Verne, he compiled a 13–4 overall record, posted a 3.73 ERA, and recorded 159 strikeouts over 137.2 innings pitched. He issued only 70 walks, showing elite command and a calm presence on the mound.
In 2025 alone, DesMarets helped lead La Verne to its third straight SCIAC regular season title and its first SCIAC Tournament championship since 2015. That season, he went 9–2 with a 2.90 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 80.2 innings, earning ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-America honors, First Team All-Region, and First Team All-SCIAC recognition.
La Verne Head Coach Scott Winterburn praised DesMarets' relentless dedication and well-earned opportunity.
"A lot of players around the country are deserving of a shot at professional baseball, but Matthew has truly earned it every single day he's been here," said Winterburn. "I've never had a guy work harder toward that goal. This moment—getting signed—is something he's worked for tirelessly, and I couldn't be happier for him.
I'm sure it's incredibly gratifying for him, but his journey is just beginning, and he's ready for the challenge. We'll meet up before he heads out so I can wish him well, but I really believe Matthew is going to do well."
DesMarets now joins a select group of Division III players advancing to the professional ranks, exemplifying the high level of talent and work ethic developed in La Verne's program.
