THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Alyssa Smith notched her fifth double-double of the season, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team hung tough with Cal Lutheran early. But the Leopards couldn't overcome a big second quarter surge from the Regals, falling on the road, 61-44.
Smith hit the 20-point mark for the third time this season, knocking down two three-pointers and 10 free throws in the process. She grabbed nine defensive boards and 11 total rebounds in the game.
Maya Sanborn finished with six points and four rebounds,
Samantha Miller added four points and five rebounds, and
Zaria Gomez tallied six points and five rebounds.
The Leopards and Reglas were tied 13-13 after the opening 10 minutes thanks to a late bucket by Miller. Cal Lutheran surged in the second out outscoring La Verne 17-6 in the frame. The Leopards kept pace in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the halftime deficit.
