Leopards Shut Out Poets for Second SCIAC Win

WHITTIER, CA — Jessica Figueroa put the Leopards up 1-0 early in the second half, and the University of La Verne women's soccer team held on to their second SCIAC win of the season, defeating the Whittier College Poets 1-0.

In the 49th minute, the Leopards poked away a misplayed Whittier goal kick. Figueroa gathered the ball just outside the box, spun a defender around, and placed a perfect right-footed shot past the outstretched arms of the keeper.

Figueroa's first goal of the season was all the offense the Leopards needed to hold onto the win. Sophia Penaflo had a big game in net, recording eight saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

The Leopards turned away 13 shots, aided by stellar backline defense led by senior Maren Handel.

La Verne returns to action this Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a 7 p.m. matchup. The Athenas are currently one point ahead of La Verne in the SCIAC standings.
