LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team (2-6) will take on Whittier College (1-7) on Saturday at 1 P.M. In the last regular-season game, the Leopards will recognize 20 seniors on senior day, and look to secure a home postseason game with a win.
LAST TIME OUT
The University of La Verne Leopards suffered a heartbreaking 29-26 loss to Azusa Pacific on Saturday night, falling on a last-second Hail Mary as time expired. After trailing 10-0 early in the second quarter, La Verne battled back behind a standout performance from senior running back Tyler McCown, who rushed for 181 yards on 27 carries while scoring two touchdowns. Brian Rudden added a late rushing touchdown to give the Leopards a three-point lead with just 30 seconds remaining, but the Cougars answered with a game-winning touchdown on the final play. Rudden and Jordan Hernandez combined for 126 passing yards, while Lorenzo Bracamonte led the receivers with 47 yards on four catches. Defensively, Roger Price III led La Verne with nine tackles, while Devin Martin recorded eight tackles and a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss. Salvatore Felice added a sack, forced fumble and pass breakup, and Brooklyn Pasten recovered a fumble.
THE MATCHUP
The Poets are coming off a 59-0 loss against Cal Lutheran and are looking to get back on track. La Verne will face an offense that has more success on the ground, averaging just 155 passing yards per game. Expect La Verne to load the box and force the Poets to beat them through the air.
Offensively, the Leopards have gotten back to the run game, relying on McCown, as well as their QBs, to keep defenses guessing. Against a defense that allows more than 200 rush yards per game, La Verne will use that to their advantage.
SERIES HISTORY
The Leopards are riding an eight-game winning streak against Whittier and are 9-1 since 2013.
