LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne men's basketball team fell just short of victory against the Caltech Beavers, the final score 88-85 on Wednesday night.
Percy Whittaker scored a season high of 17 points, shot 70% from the field, and tied his season highs in rebounds, and steals.
The first half was a back and forth battle, with neither team gaining more than a six point advantage. La Verne tied it early on, 8-8 with three pointers from
Jackson Gray and
Cody Aquino. Gray scored 15 points, and grabbed a rebound and an assist on the night. The Leopards did damage at the free throw line, making over 50% of their free throws. With the Leopards tied 45-45,
Higgy Katoa made a three pointer with one second left, and made the and-one attempt to give La Verne a four point lead at the half.
The second half was a non-stop battle. Whittaker turned on the gas, starting with a driving layup, pushing the Leos into the lead, 70-67. Whittaker grabbed six rebounds, two steals, and made three free throws. The Leos maintained the lead until under a minute left, when the Beavers pulled ahead, led by Dorian Glogovac, who scored 41 points on the night, off 57% shooting.
Gray and Aquino finished with 15 points. Katoa finished with 14 points, three steals and four assists, and
James Christian scored 10 points.
The Leopards will close the season against Pomona-Pitzer on February 21st, at 2 pm at the Tents. La Verne will host a ceremony for the seniors prior to the game.
