Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Salo & Crenna Invite

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season with a bang, recording 22 personal bests for the men and 14 for the women at the annual Pomona-Pitzer David Salo & Nancy Crenna College Invite.

"Under clear blue skies and snow-capped mountains, we had a good meet to start the outdoor campaign. With some solid newcomer performances and senior leadership, the Leos showed well, and I'm excited about the coming weeks," said La Verne Track and Field Head Coach Kevin Reid.

The men went six-for-six in PRs in the 3000m, led by Fernando Cortez, moving to number four on the ULV All-Time performance list with a time of 8:48.86. Eamon Wright (8:58.25), Nicolas Saenz (9:05.25), Diego Herrera (9:09.57), Joseph Chavarria (9:15.41), and Logan Ciszek (9:45.13) posted lifetime bests. Chavarria won his heat of the 3000m.

The women added their own PR sweep with four lifetime bets in the 800m. Chloe Chong led the Leopards in the race with a time of 2:35.75. Chong finished the day with three PRs, adding new bests in the pole vault (2.30m, 7' 6.5") and with her 400m split in the 4x400m relay. Kaliah Ramirez (2:43.00), CC Flaherty (2:49.72), and Mariah Huizar  (2:53.18) posted PRs in the 800m.

Freshman Deon Jordan led the Leopards in the jumping events, taking third in the men's long jump with a PR of 6.44m.

Harrison Brown and Hunter Bond opened the day on the track, both recording big PRs in the 110m hurdles. Brown took third overall with a time of 15.48, and Bond added a time of 17.90. Bond followed with another personal best in the pole vault (3.50m, 11-05.75), improving by nearly a foot.

Freshman Jusiah Vinson paced La Verne in the sprints with impressive PRs in the 100m (11.49) and 200m (22.78).

The Leopards will be back in action on Saturday, February 28, back in Claremont. The Leopards will head north of Sixth Street to compete at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Rossi Relays.
