Knight in Shining Armor, Leopards Sweep Tigers

LOS ANGELES – The University of La Verne softball team completed their SCIAC opening series with a sweep of the Tigers on the road.

Game One: La Verne 2, Occidental 1

Kylee Knight shined brightly against the Occidental Tigers in game two of the series against the Occidental Tigers on Saturday, with a hit, a run, and an RBI.

Knight, a junior from San Diego, tied the game up 1-1 in the second inning, scoring off a sacrifice fly to left center from Bryce Shroyer. Knight brought in the second score of the game for the Leos in the sixth, when she scored Alexis Keifer with a sacrafice fly to center. Briana Vasquez pitched a complete game for the Leos, allowing only one run, and striking out four batters. 

Game Two: La Verne 6, Occidental 2

Angelina Ratzlaff and Allie Colenzo ran the Leopards to the finish line in game three, combining for two runs, three hits, and three RBIs.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, Annica Luna cross the plate off a sacrifice fly from Janelle Vega. Ratzlaff tied it up 2-2 in the fifth, running home after Knight hit a sacrifice hit to center field.

The Leos took off from there, scoring thrice in the sixth, and once in the seventh. Colenzo highlighted the top of the sixth, with a two RBI single to center field, sending Ava Chacon and Ratzlaff home. Jaidynn Alvarez pitched a complete game in the circle for the Leos, picking up her second win with no walks and a strikeout. 

Next Game

La Verne is back in action on Monday, March 2 at 1 p.m., against Gustavus Adolphus hosted at Whittier College.
