LA VERNE, CA – Alyssa Smith led the Leopards with 24 points and grabbed a season high 19 rebounds,
Isabella Gray-Musolff added 15 points, but the University of La Verne women's basketball team fell to the Occidental College Tigers at home on Saturday, 65-57.
Smith finished just short of her season high 25 points that she scored against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in December. Smith recorded her ninth double-double of the season. Smith entered the game leading the SCIAC in points, and in second in points per game.
As the clock ticked on, Gray-Musolff, the junior from Morro Bay, stepped into her own and started sinking three-pointers, making her first four attempts from beyond the arc. Gray-Musolff finished the game with a career-high four made threes, and added five assists, five rebounds, and a steal. When the half-time buzzer sounded, the Leos were up 29-27.
As the second half got rolling,
Jasmine Prajitno made two good jumpers, keeping the Leos within three points of the Tigers midway through the third quarter.
Maya Sanborn stayed tough in the paint and finished the day shooting 75% from the field. Smith continued to show her athletic dominance with three layups within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. As the game came to a close, Smith got the Leopards to within four points with under two minutes left to play. But the Tigers pulled ahead and held on for an eight point win.
Sanborn finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
The Leopards are back in action against the Cal Lutheran Regals on February 11th at 7 p.m. at home.
