WHITTIER, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team dropped both games of their Saturday doubleheader, which was hosted at Whittier College, to the No. 7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags, 11-1 and 9-6.
Â
Game One: CMS 11, La Verne 1 - 8 innings
Â
CMS put on an offensive display in game one, scoring 11 runs off 17 hits and closing out game one of the doubleheader in eight innings. The Leopards scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when
Aidan Salcedo was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a
Nathan Perry RBI single up the middle.
Â
Corbin Duffield took the loss tossing three innings, allowing five runs off six hits and dropping to 3-2 on the season while Tegin Maloney picked up the win for CMS, throwing seven innings of one run ball and striking out seven Leopards.
Â
Game Two: CMS 9, La Verne 6 - 10 innings
Â
Salcedo led the Leopards offensively, notching three hits and three RBIs while
RJ Libby also picked up three knocks and Perry brought in two runs.Â
Â
In what started as a classic pitcher's duel,
Jack Holguin held things down on the mound for the Leopards, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs off four hits while striking out six batters. CMS starter Joshua Lewis threw 5.1 innings, surrendering two runs off six hits and a walk.
Â
The game was tied 2-2, entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Stags took a one-run lead off on an error and a single, then extended their lead 6-2 when shortstop Alex Henderson hit a three-run home run.
Â
The Leopards battled back in the top of the eighth inning, pushing three runs across off four hits to make it a one run game approaching the final frame of play.
Â
After an 11 pitch at bat, Perry walked to lead off the top of the ninth inning and
RJ Libby followed with a single.
Alek Bautista reached base on an error to bring up
Daniel Moreno with the bases loaded and no outs. He grounded into a double play, but the tying run in Perry scored, putting the score at an even six runs each, and eventually sending the game into extra innings.
Â
The Leopards were unable to capitalize in their half of the 10th, and Carter Bennett of CMS ended the game with one swing of his bat in the bottom of the tenth, hitting a three-run home run and winning the game for the Stags 9-6.
Â
Holguin received no decision on the mound while the loss went to
Aaron Whobrey. Andrew Blackett of CMS received the win.Â
Â
Up Next: La Verne will return to Campus West tomorrow for a non-conference matchup against Whitman College at 10 a.m.Â
