LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne softball team defeated the Elmhurst University Bluejays in a neck-and-neck doubleheader on Saturday. Junior catcher Bryce Shroyer led the Leos to victory, with three hits, one RBI, and one run, and sophomore pitcher Briana Vasquez did damage both in the circle and at the plate.
Game One: La Verne 1, Elmhurst 0
Vasquez played one of her best games of the season, pitching her fourth complete game of the year. The sophomore, who was named SCIAC Pitcher of the Week earlier this month for her performances against Occidental, allowed no runs, struck out three, and didn't walk a batter.
Game one was scoreless until the fourth inning when Vasquez helped her own cause and tripled to centerfield. Pinch runner Natalie Serrano stepped in at third and scored when Brooke Petretti hit a sacrifice to the left field foul territory.
Six different Leopards recorded hits in the game. Ava Chacon, Allie Colenzo, and Vasquez each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Game Two: La Verne 4, Elmhurst 2
The Jays pulled ahead early in game two, scoring twice in the third, but the Leopards rallied for three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good and complete the sweep.
Pinch runner Sofia Carillo got the Leopards rolling with some quick base running. The freshman easily swiped second and a few pitches later, stole third, and then raced home on a throwing error by the Bluejays' catcher.
Kileah Lologo continued the momentum when she stepped up and singled, sending Shroyer and Colenzo home to give the Leopards a 3-2 lead at the end of the fourth.
Shroyer added an insurance run in the sixth when she delivered a single that sent Petretti home. Shroyer adds to her impressive stats at La Verne, now boasting 10 hits and 10 RBIs in her first year as a Leopard.
Pitcher Alyssa Tafolla dominated the circle in four innings of relief. She struck out two and allowed just two hits to pick up her second win of the season.
