WHITTIER, CA – Kylee Knight,
Annica Luna, and
Brooke Petretti led the charge to a University of La Verne softball victory on Friday against the Whittier College Poets, 8-2. Knight and Luna finished the day with two hits and two runs, Petretti added three and one run.
The Leopards excuted early with a double steal. Vega crossed home and Knight swiped second. The Leopards scored again in the first inning with a single from Petretti and that scored Knight. Whittier answered in the bottom of the first to put the score at 2-1.
After three scoreless innings, the Petretti–Knight duo scored again, with a sacrifice fly from Petretti that sent Knight home.
Angelina Ratzlaff followed suit in the sixth, with a single to right field that brough in Luna. The Leos swung for three singles and two stolen bases in the seventh inning, lengthening their lead to seven. The Poets tried to close the gap, but couldn't find success.
Reigning SCIAC Pitcher of the Week Briana Vasquez tossed seven innings for La Verne, striking out two. Vasquez now has four wins to her name this season.
The Leos are back in action on Saturday to face the Poets again in a double header, at 12 pm and 2 pm at Campus West.
