Baseball Drops Game One to Kingsmen

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team dropped game one of their three game set against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 15-6.

Ryan Vosika picked up three hits and two RBIs while Nathan Perry also knocked down a hit and grabbed two RBIs. Starting pitcher Andrew Wente tossed four innings, allowing two runs, only one earned off four hits.

The Kingsmen struck first, taking a 1-0 lead off an error in the top of the second allowed center fielder Wes Lynch to cross the plate, but the small lead didn't hold long.

Vosika sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of the third with a single up the middle. Aaron Whobrey followed by reaching on an error, and Aidan Salcedo added an infield single to load the bases for cleanup hitter Perry. The senior catcher delivered, dropping a single in to center field to bring in two runs and give La Verne a 2-1 lead. Isaiah Figueroa kept things rolling with the Leopards' fourth hit of the inning, allowing Salcedo to score and extend the lead to 3-1.

Vosika notched his second single of the day in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in another two runs for the Leopards to make the score 5-1.

The insurance runs proved necessary, as the Kingsmen scored four runs off two hits in the top of the fifth to tie the game back up at five runs a game.

With RJ Libby in scoring position on second base, freshman Lucas Zayac was called on to pinch hit in a huge moment for the Leopards. The newcomer delivered, hitting an RBI double down the left field line to put the Leopards back in the lead by one run.

The Kingsmen took back their lead in the top of the seventh inning, scoring another two runs off two hits, and put the nail in the coffin in their half of the eighth when Jacob Blickenderfer connected for a three run home run to right field to give Cal Lutheran a 10-6 lead.

Cal Lutheran plated five more runs throughout the rest of the game to secure their 15-6 victory.

La Verne will head to Thousand Oaks for a doubleheader tomorrow against the Kingsmen, with game times set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
