Leopards Edged by UCSC Late

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne women's soccer team lost a close game, falling to UC Santa Cruz, 1-0.

Both sides were separated by inches in the box score. The Leopards outshot the Banana Slugs 11-10 and created more chances with corner kicks, with seven compared to the Banana Slugs' 3.

The first half remained scoreless thanks to key saves from the goalkeeper Sophia Penaflor, who finished the match with four saves.

The Leopards came out firing in the second half, creating multiple chances with shots on goal. But the Banana Slugs pulled away late in the 79th minute with a goal from forward Sharon Alcocer to close out the match.

Natalie Kooba and Megan Sewell each had chances, finishing with four and three shots, respectively. The Leopards had a chance late when Sewell let off a close-range shot that was saved. Patricia Acoba got off a shot from the rebound, but the ball deflected off the post.

La Verne's record falls to 0-3-1 in the young season.

The Leopards return to action at Ortmayer Stadium on Wednesday, September 16, at 7 p.m. against Occidental College.
